FERROGLOBE CELEBRATES THE 50TH ANNIVERSARY OF ITS SABÓN PLANT REAFFIRMING ITS COMMITMENT AND FOCUS ON INNOVATION

A Coruña, Galicia (Spain), June 3, 2022. Ferroglobe PLC (NASDAQ: GSM), one of the world's leading producers of silicon metal and silicon and manganese-based ferroalloys, celebrated this morning the 50th anniversary of its plant in Sabón (A Coruña, Galicia) at an institutional event held at its facilities.

The event was attended by Alfonso Rueda, president of the Xunta de Galicia; Francisco Conde, first vice-president and counsellor of Economy, Industry and Innovation; José Manuel Miñones Conde, delegate of the Spanish Government in Galicia; and Carlos Calvelo, mayor of Arteixo (A Coruña), among other authorities.

All of them accompanied Ferroglobe's executive chairman, Javier López Madrid; its CEO, Marco Levi; and the rest of the company's Management Team during their visit to the Sabón facilities, where they learned about the operation of the plant and its evolution since 1972, when it was opened as a factory with the capacity to meet the demand for silicon metal in the national market. The Sabón plant is the only plant that produces this material in Spain, a product that has a wide application in dynamic and fast-growing markets, such as solar, automotive, consumer products, construction and energy, among others.

The Sabón plant started its operations initially under the French group Pechiney, then under the partnership Carburos Métálicos in the eighties and finally under Grupo Villar Mir since 1992, first through Grupo Ferroatlántica and later as Ferroglobe.

Currently, the Ferroglobe plant in Sabón has three furnaces in operation, focused on the production of metallurgical silicon through an industrial model that prioritizes technological innovation and respect for the environment, as well as the safety and health of workers.

Historically, it has been the site for the development of Ferroglobe's Research and Development projects (ELSA, Solar Project, Copper Plate Casting), a DNA that has been maintained over time, making the plant the center of new innovation projects (Silicon powder). The facilities are completed with Ferroglobe's innovation center in Sabón and with a pilot plant focused on the development of R&D projects, such as the production of high purity silicon for batteries and other advanced technologies.

Ferroglobe's CEO, Marco Levi, explained that "today is a very special day for all of us at Ferroglobe globally, because one of our plants is celebrating half a century of life". "Sabón has been a strategic plant for Ferroglobe because of its silicon production capacity during all these years, a critical material for the development of many industries and with a potential for growth in the market; and because of its innovation model, key in its successful trajectory and one of the pillars of the company."

A total investment of 4.2 million euros in Sabón and its R&D project
Ferroglobe strengthens its commitment in Sabón with an investment of 2.2 million euros in 2022 for the silicon metallurgical plant with the aim of maintaining high operational efficiency and maximum safety standards.

Additionally, with a focus on innovation and with the aim of boosting business growth, the company has also invested 2 million euros in 2021-2022 - between its own funding and funding from the Xunta de Galicia and the Government of Spain - through Ferroglobe Innovation in the pilot plant and R&D projects related to the development of new materials for the anode of lithium-ion batteries, a further step in the project to produce high-purity silicon for batteries and other advanced technologies.

Luis Castillón, Plant Manager at Sabón, pointed out that "50 years of industrial activity, a great achievement, can only be explained by the resilience and perseverance of all the workers and managers who have worked at the factory throughout its history, and the support of the public administrations in Galicia". "Our material and products are sold across five continents and our challenge for the coming decades is to continue to improve our efficiency and competitiveness, with the highest safety and full respect for the environment."
