Vagalume: Decarbonisation of the Silicon Production Process.

Participants: Ferroglobe Spain Metals SLU

Budget: The total investment is €28 million, for which €11.7 million grant will be received.

Public funding: Funded by the European Union NextGenerationEU, Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan, Government of Spain + Ministry of Industry and Tourism. 

The project consists of the substitution of fossil-based raw materials with low-carbon raw materials for the decarbonization of silicon metallurgical production. The project includes the construction of a biocarbon production plant, research on the optimization of the process and the use of potential by-products, as well as a complete environmental impact study.


 

Bioreductants for Silicon Production in France

Location: Region Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, France

Time frame: 2023 - 2028

Participants: Ferroglobe France

Budget: Grant of €5,880,000.

Public funding: French government as part of the France 2030 "Industrie Zéro Fossile, Volet 2 (DECARB IND)" call for projects for the decarbonization of industry operated by ADEME (Agency for Ecological Transition).

Main objectives: The grant will be used to implement a project to produce bioreductants for silicon production, with the aim of reducing Ferroglobe's CO2 emissions by 73,120 tonnes per year.
